By: Three nights after Illinois College defeated Webster in St. Louis, the Gorloks came to Jacksonville and returned the favor.
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team was downed by Webster University on Friday night by a score of 5-4. A rainout in March created a rare situation in which the Blueboys and Gorloks met twice in a span of four days. Though IC was victorious on Tuesday night, Webster outlasted the Blueboys this time around, improving to 2-4. IC is now 2-8 on the season.
In their earlier meeting, Illinois College took a 2-1 lead after doubles. This time around, the Gorloks took the early advantage. Though the No. 1 team of
Miguel Vaca and
Michael Connolly won their match, 8-1, Webster won the Nos. 2 and 3 matches by scores of 8-5 and 8-4.
Vaca had no trouble in his No. 1 singles match either, defeating Carlos Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1. That knotted the match momentarily, but Eric Bateman then put the finishing touches on a 6-2, 6-0 win over
Collin Walter at No. 6 singles.
The next point for Illinois College came at No. 3 where
Nazar Otunchiev defeated Ray Robson, 6-3, 6-1. Once again, the Gorloks took the lead back with a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Trent Purnell over
Rolando Salazar in the No. 2 match.
Webster clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph by Nicolas Andrade over
T.J. Lawal at No. 5 singles. Connolly ended the match on a high note for the Blueboys by defeating Charles McGee at No. 4, 6-1, 7-6(4).
Illinois College returns to Midwest Conference play on April 18 with a home match against Knox College at 5 p.m.
