WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. – The Illinois College men's tennis team won its second match of the season on Tuesday night, holding off Webster University for a 5-4 victory. The Blueboys won two out of three doubles matches, then held on for the win by splitting the six singles matches with the Gorloks. IC is now 2-7 on the year.
The night started well for Illinois College as the No. 1 pair of
Miguel Vaca and
Michael Connolly won their doubles match by a score of 8-3. The Blueboys nabbed their second point of the night at No. 2 doubles as
Nazar Otunchiev and
Rolando Salazar secured an 8-6 win. Webster took a point from No. 3 doubles as the IC pair of
T.J. Lawal and
Collin Walter fell, 8-2.
As the night progressed into singles, Webster had little trouble earning points at the Nos. 2, 5 and 6 spots over Salazar, Lawal and Walter. For the Blueboys, Vaca returned the favor with a 6-1, 6-0 romp at the No. 1 position. That left the score at 4-3 in favor of Webster. Otunchiev knotted the match at 4-4 with his 6-3, 6-3 decision in the No. 3 singles match. The deciding point then fell to Connolly at No. 4 and the sophomore came up with a 7-5, 6-4 victory to clinch the match for the Blueboys.
Illinois College will have a chance to go for two in a row over Webster on April 14 when the Gorloks come to the Bellatti Tennis Complex at 5:30 p.m. to make up the match originally scheduled here for March 25 between the teams.
