4/17/2016 7:33:00 PM

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Illinois College men's tennis team showed its continued improvement, but fell twice by 9-0 scores on Sunday to Grinnell College and Cornell College. IC is now 2-13 (1-5 MWC) for the season.

In the early match of the day, the Blueboys were overwhelmed by the outstanding depth of Grinnell. The Pioneers used 12 different players in singles and doubles en route to the sweep. At No. 1 singles, Jose Coloma broke Miguel Vaca's long winning streak with a 6-1, 7-5 victory. Sam Catanzaro scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michael Connolly at No. 2 singles as well and the Pioneers won each match in straight sets.

In the afternoon, Illinois College played shorthanded and fell behind 3-0 in doubles after defaulting on the No. 3 match. Cornell took all six singles matches in straight sets with Vaca providing the closest match for the Blueboys. Gabriel Souza survived a first-set tiebreaker and came away with a 7-6(1), 6-4 victory over Vaca. Connolly was defeated 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

The Blueboys will be in search of their second MWC victory of the season on Tuesday when they travel to take on Knox College in a match beginning at 4:30 p.m.
