ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Illinois College men's tennis team has consistently gotten a point at the top of the singles ladder this season from freshman
Miguel Vaca and Saturday was no different. This time around, he and fellow freshman
Michael Connolly were able to team for a commanding victory at No. 1 doubles as well, but that was all the Blueboys could get as IC fell to 0-9 this season after a 7-2 loss to Webster University.
The day had a promising start for the Blueboys after an 8-2 win for Vaca and Connolly at the top doubles match, but the Gorloks came back for 8-1 wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
In the singles, Vaca dispatched Webster No. 1 Juan Granizo, 7-6, 6-4 to earn a second point for the Blueboys. Unfortunately, no other IC player picked up a point.
Ryan Golab-Vice came the closest at No. 6, but came up on the short end of a 2-6, 6-1, 5-10 defeat to Eric Bateman. Connolly,
Elijah Rhoad,
T.J. Lawal and
Brandon Hollenbeck all lost in straight sets.
Illinois College will take on the University of Illinois-Springfield on March 30 in a match to be played at Rochester High School. Action will get underway at 5 p.m.
