3/25/2016 6:34:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team put up a fight at times, but ultimately came up on the short end of an 8-1 loss to Monmouth College on Friday morning in the Midwest Conference openers for each team. The Blueboys went to 0-8 (0-1 MWC) in defeat, while the Scots improved to 3-7 (1-0 MWC).

Monmouth took control early on in the day, winning all three of the doubles matches and putting the Blueboys in a deep deficit. The best result in doubles for IC came at No. 1, where Miguel Vaca and Michael Connolly fell, 8-3. The Nos. 2 and 3 teams for the Blueboys each lost, 8-1.

In singles action, Vaca was an easy winner against Monmouth's No. 1, Landon Walker. The IC freshman improved to 7-1 in singles this season after a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Unfortunately, the rest of the Blueboys couldn't keep up with the Scots in their other matches. Ryan Golab-Vice came back strong in the second set, but fell to Kevin Lewis at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Connolly, Elijah Rhoad, T.J. Lawal and Brandon Hollenbeck took the other losses for IC.

Illinois College immediately returns to action tomorrow for a non-conference match at Webster University. The Blueboys and Gorloks will meet in St. Louis in a match scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
