Blueboys Badgered by Westminster in 8-1 Defeat

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team fell to 0-7 on the season after an 8-1 loss to visiting Westminster College (MO) on Sunday. Miguel Vaca won his singles match at No. 1 to improve to 6-1 on the season, but none of the other matches went the way of the Blueboys.

Illinois College went into a deep hole, trailing 3-0 after doubles. Down 2-0 after 8-1 and 8-0 losses at Nos. 2 and 3, the Blueboys were close to a point from Vaca and Michael Connolly at No. 1, but the freshmen were ultimately defeated, 9-7.

Once the match got into singles action, the Blue Jays put away the match quickly with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Connolly fell, 1-6, 4-6, to Kyle Collins and Elijah Rhoad was defeated, 1-6, 0-6, by Pete Hasenmueller. Though Vaca earned a point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 against Adam Fuchs, the rest of the matches went to pro sets. The best showing came from Ryan Golab-Vice, who lost at No. 6, 9-7. T.J. Lawal lost at No. 4, 8-1. Brandon Hollenbeck was defeated at No. 5 singles, 8-0.

Illinois College will stay at home for its first Midwest Conference match of the season on March 25. The Blueboys will meet Monmouth College at 10 a.m. at the Bellatti Tennis Complex.
