By: The Blueboys played their best match of the season, fighting hard in a 7-2 defeat to Fontbonne University at the Bellatti Tennis Complex.
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team might have come up short of a victory on Saturday afternoon, but the Blueboys showed the strides they have made this season despite the 7-2 loss to Fontbonne University.
The Griffins took a 2-1 lead in doubles through wins at Nos. 1 and 2.
Anthony Samples and
Elijah Rhoad were especially competitive in the No. 1 match, falling 8-4.
In singles, Fontbonne came away with five points to seal the win, but it wasn't easy for the visitors from St. Louis.
T.J. Lawal took a 5-2 lead in the first set at No. 3 before falling to Stephen Lendy, 7-5 and 6-2. At No. 4,
Brandon Hollenbeck fell behind a set but led 4-3 in the second until Andrew Overmyer took the final three games in a 6-2, 6-4 win.
At Nos. 1 and 2, Rhoad took a 6-3, 6-3 defeat against Blake Wisniewski while Samples fell to Khoa Trieu, 6-3, 6-2.
The Blueboys jump back into Midwest Conference play tomorrow morning with a pair of matches at the Bellatti Tennis Complex. IC hosts Grinnell College at 9 a.m. and then turns around to face Cornell College at 12 p.m.
