By: The Blueboys hold the highest-scoring team in the Midwest Conference without a goal for their fourth straight shutout.
Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – The Illinois College men's soccer team had a tall task in front of it on Sunday with a trip to No. 22 St. Norbert closing out a doubleheader weekend that started with a 1-0 win at Lawrence on Saturday. Despite the travel and heavy legs, the defensive steel that the Blueboys have shown recently held firm, allowing IC to return home with a 0-0 draw against the Green Knights.
With the tie, Illinois College wraps up its five-match road trip with a 6-3-2 overall record and now stands at 2-0-1 in the Midwest Conference. It's the second straight draw for St. Norbert, who is now 7-0-2 on the season and drop behind IC at 1-0-2 in the conference.
The Blueboys looked like the more likely team to score in the first half. IC had eight shots to four for St. Norbert in the opening 45 minutes. SNC goalkeeper Sam Lisheron made four of his five saves over that span to keep Illinois College off the board.
St. Norbert began to control the run of play as the game progressed. The Green Knights held a 16-4 shot advantage over the second half and overtime, but with
Scott Workman making seven saves in goal, the home team was denied at every opportunity. It is the fourth consecutive shutout for Workman and the Illinois College defense.
"St. Norbert is undefeated for a reason," noted Head Coach
Tyler Sheikh. "They're a well-coached team stocked with attacking talent and a no-nonsense defense. Today was a tale of two halves. We really got our tactics right and strung together the majority of possession in the first half. In the second half, St. Norbert made some adjustments, but the guys showed an ability to adapt and in the end, get a well-deserved point and a shutout against a nationally-ranked team."
Joe Tooley paced the IC attack with three shots in the contest.
Roger Mies chipped in two shots as well.
Of the final seven matches of the regular season, five are now at home for Illinois College, including each of the next four. The Blueboys will be at England Stadium on Oct. 9 for a 7 p.m. kick-off against Monmouth.
