Steve Schweer is in his eighth season as the head men's basketball coach and third year as the associate director of athletics at Illinois College in 2025-26.

Under Schweer’s guidance, the Blueboys have reached unprecedented heights in the program’s history, winning a pair of Midwest Conference regular season titles, two postseason tournament championships, and making two NCAA Tournament appearances. Entering the 2025-26 campaign, the Blueboys are 66-13 over the past three seasons.

The 2024-25 season saw IC continue its winning ways, posting 17 victories and becoming the only program in the Midwest Conference to qualify for the past four conference tournaments. Schweer reached a personal milestone on February 8th when IC topped Lawrence to record the 100th victory of his coaching career. Individually, senior Buzz Ritzel became the first player in 15 years to be named first-team All-Midwest Conference for three consecutive years. Classmate Josh Harris was also an all-conference honoree.

The 2023-24 campaign was one for the ages as IC opened the season with 12 straight victories, the best start in school history, and never looked back, rolling to a second consecutive Midwest Conference regular season title with a 13-3 record. The Blueboys spent four weeks ranked among the nation’s Top 25, the first such ranking in school history. In March, Schweer’s squad captured the league’s postseason tournament title for the second straight year with a stirring come-from-behind victory over Grinnell. This resulted in the program’s second consecutive, and third overall, NCAA Tournament berth.

Once in the tournament, the Blueboys again made history when Josh Harris sank a 30-foot three-point field goal at the buzzer to defeat Dubuque, 59-57, and give the school its first NCAA Tournament victory. The second round saw IC fall at Washington University, 68-67 to finish with a 24-5 record. Individual awards were plentiful as Jake Mazrimas was named to the NABC All-District 9 team as well as earning Player of the Year accolades from the Midwest Conference. Mazrimas was joined on the first-team all-conference squad by Ritzel, while Nestor Daboin was on the second team.

The Blueboys also had a historic season during the 2022-23 campaign posting the greatest overall record in program history at 25-3, breaking the mark of 18 which had stood since 1949. Under Schweer's leadership, the team won the program’s first MWC regular season title and its second MWC Tournament championship in program history. Schweer led the program to its second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and its first in 20 years. The squad was recognized by the MWC as Tre Rogers and Ritzel earned first-team all-conference honors while Daboin and Mazrimas were on the second team. For his efforts, Schweer was named Coach of the Year by the Midwest Conference and D3Hoops (in Region 9).

The 2021-22 season saw the Blueboys finish in the top four of the Midwest Conference and return to the conference tournament for the first time since 2011. The Blueboys stood out on the defensive end of the floor, ranking among the top three in the league in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense while leading the league in rebounding margin. The success the Blueboys had as a team also led to individual recognition, with Rogers and Mazrimas both earning second-team all-conference honors. IC ended the season with an overall record of 14-11, including a 10-6 finish in conference play.

During an abbreviated season in 2020-21, Illinois College posted a record of 7-2, including a perfect 4-0 ledger against Midwest Conference opponents.

In Schweer's first season on the Hilltop (2019-20), the Blueboys more than doubled their win total in conference play. Mason Speer became the first IC player since 2013-14 to earn All-MWC recognition as he finished fifth in the NCAA in assists per game. The Blueboys broke a school record set by the 2013-14 team by making 229 three-pointers during the season.

Schweer made coaching stops at Lakeland College and North Park University early in his coaching career before starting a five-year stint as an assistant at Monmouth College. He helped the Fighting Scots rise from the bottom of the Midwest Conference to ultimately reach the MWC Tournament in 2014-15. He then moved to North Central College, starting during the 2016-17 season.

In his two years with the Cardinals, Schweer helped guide the program to a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) postseason league tournament bids, winning the title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in his initial season. North Central then defeated the College of Wooster in the first round. The following campaign saw North Central advance to the CCIW title game and again earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A native of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, and a graduate of Hinsdale Central High School, Schweer had a four-year playing career at Illinois Wesleyan University, where he helped the Titans twice advance to the Sweet Sixteen and reach the Final Four in his senior season. He graduated in 2006 with a degree in history and added a master's degree in education from North Park in 2011.

Schweer resides in Jacksonville with his wife, Tabitha, daughter, Samantha, and son Camden.
