Andrew Coon enters his second year at the helm of the IC men's and women's tennis programs, having been the interim head coach for the 2020-21 season and promoted to full-time head coach this past May.
Coach Coon has been involved in tennis since he was 8 years old, having grown up in St. Louis and competed in junior and adult leagues and tournaments until his move to Springfield, IL in 2019. Coach Coon went to high school in St. Louis, having attended Ladue Horton Watkins High school, graduating in 1996. While at Ladue High, Coach Coon was a member of 2 Missouri state championship teams and 2 runner-up teams. He continued his playing at the collegiate level at University of Missouri St. Louis, D2, where he competed and excelled his 3 years playing for the Rivermen (now the Tritons).
For the last 10 years, Coach Coon has been a certified USPTA teaching pro both in St. Louis and in the Mid-South region of IL, having earned his Elite status in 2019. Having coached at the High School level (Lutheran High School – St. Charles) and national Junior Team Tennis teams in the past, collegiate coaching had always been a dream of his. As well as being a USPTA Elite pro, Coach Coon is also heavily involved in the development and promotion of tennis in this part of the country; having recently been named the USPTA IL Vice-President and a member of the USTA Midwest division.
Keeping up with his teaching background, Coach Coon is also the Tennis Director of Illini Country Club in Springfield, as well as a Board Member of the Central IL Tennis Association. Coaches’ wife Carrie, a Springfield native, is the Inclusion Specialist for Trinity Lutheran School in Springfield and they have a 3-year-old daughter, Elliana. Coach Coon’s moto is simple, “The hard work you put in both the classroom and on/off the tennis courts, will show up in the results at the end of the season!”
