Mike Worrell

Mike Worrell enters his 17th season as head men’s basketball coach and second as an assistant baseball coach at Illinois College.

Worrell came to Illinois College in 1996. He was named Midwest Conference Coach of the Year following the 1998-99 season when IC ended a drought of 20 years without a winning record. His teams followed that up with back-to-back winning campaigns in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Worrell was voted Midwest Conference Coach of the Year once again after the 2002-03 season when his team won the MWC Tournament for the first time and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Prior to his arrival at Illinois College, Worrell spent six years as an assistant coach at The College of Wooster in Ohio. The Fighting Scots compiled a record of 135-32, won three North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament titles and made five NCAA Division III Tournament appearances during his time there. Worrell served a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Ashland College before that. The Eagles posted a record of 41-17 during those two seasons and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament’s Sweet 16 in 1990. A native of Forest, Ohio, Worrell started his coaching career at Urbana University, his alma mater.

Worrell is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, is currently the chair of the MWC men’s basketball coaches, serves on the NABC All-American Committee, and has directed boys’ basketball camps for 23 years.

Worrell and his wife, Stacey, reside in Jacksonville with their children: Alexandra, Sara and Lucas.
