Lady Blues Rally to Win in Opening Game of MWC Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College softball team rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to move on to the winner's bracket of the Midwest Conference Tournament on Friday at Jessica Kamp Field.

IC's match-up with Lake Forest was postponed due to rain and will be played on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

The Lady Blues, who won the MWC regular season title and are the top-seed in the tournament, are now 31-10 overall.

IC 6 Cornell 5
The Lady Blues jumped ahead with two runs in the second inning, thanks to a Raegan Rezba two-run single.

After Cornell tied the game at two in its half of the third, the Lady Blues regained the lead when Maddie Adams recorded a sacrifice fly to score Ezzy Mauermann. IC then took a 3-2 lead into the seventh before the Rams hung a three-spot up to take a 5-3.

The Lady Blues regrouped. Cambria Currie's pinch-hit triple cut the Cornell lead to 5-4, and then Alivia Darbe stroked a two-run single with two outs to send IC to the winners' bracket side of the tournament.

Darbe had two hits in four trips to lead the offense. Avery Fritz picked up the win after throwing 1/3 of an inning in relief of Jordan Closs, who worked the first 6 2/3 frames, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.
