IC Sweeps Cornell

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College softball team swept Cornell and kept its lead in the Midwest Conference standings on Saturday at Jessica Kamp Field.

IC took the opener, 2-1, and then posted a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.

IC is now 22-10 overall and 9-1 in Midwest Conference play. Cornell moved to 15-11 and 3-5.

Game 1: IC 2 CC 1
The Lady Blues and Rams had been in a pitching battle through three innings before IC broke the ice in the fourth, scoring two runs. Raegan Rezba scored on a Cornell error, and then Gabby Miller drove home Maddie Adams with an RBI single.

Cornell cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh, but IC starter Jordan Closs closed the door to secure the win.

Closs, who improved to 10-4 on the season, allowed five hits while recording five strikeouts. Adams and Miller led the offense with two hits apiece.

Game 2: IC 9 CC 6
IC rolled to a 6-0 lead after the first four innings. Things got going with two runs in the second innings when Shelby Seiler and Megan Doolittle both scored on Ram errors.

IC broke the game open with four runs in the third. Cambria Currie drilled an RBI single, Bella Thien had a sacrifice fly and Adams smoked a two-run double.

After Cornell got two runs in the top of the fifth, IC answered with one in its half thanks to an RBI triple off the bat of Thien.

The Rams tallied twice in the sixth inning before the Lady Blues countered with a pair of their own in the bottom half as Miller scored on a Cornell error and Kendall Cole rapped an RBI double.

Cornell would get two in the top of the seventh but it wouldn't be enough as IC won for the ninth time in 10 MWC games.

Adams and Cole each had two hits for the Lady Blues offense while Currie got the win in the circle, going six innings and allowing five hits and four runs with five strikeouts. Avery Fritz pitched the seventh inning, allowing three hits and two runs (both unearned) with a strikeout.
