MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Illinois College edged out Cornell College, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon behind a strong showing from its bullpen and a big day at the plate from
Jon Tate.
IC now moves to 19-11 overall and 7-4 in Midwest Conference play. Cornell drops to 9-17 (2-7 MWC).

The Blueboys broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a two-run triple from
Jon Tate, who drove in
Ryne Mapes and
Tyler Barker to give IC a 2-0 lead. Tate struck again in the seventh with a leadoff double and came around to score what proved to be the game-winning run.
Dawson Vernier started on the mound, allowing one run over 4.2 innings, before turning it over to the bullpen.
Andrew Wieneke earned the win with 3.2 innings of one-run relief, and
Connor Akstulewicz locked down the final two outs for the save.
Tate finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two extra-base hits. Barker reached base twice and scored a run, while the IC defense turned in a clean game with just one error and a key double play.
