Softball Splits on Saturday at Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS – The Illinois College softball team erupted for seven unanswered runs and used that to post a 7-2 victory over Fontbonne in the opening contests of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at ABC Ballpark. Fontbonne rallied to post a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

The split moved IC to 5-10 overall while Fontbonne moved to 5-14.

Game 1
IC took control early, scoring four times in the second inning on Allison Mortland's two-run double which scored Megan Dolittle and Clauda Adam. A triple by Cheyenne Anderson plated Kayla Serpa and Mortland finished out the scoring in the inning.

The Lady Blues added three more in the fifth when Calynn Gicante singled home Serpa and Adam stroked a two-run single that scored both Taylor Henry and Elysia Hand.

Fontbonne picked up a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, but Julia Drake shut down the Griffins to close out the win. Drake scattered five hits over her seven innings of work, allowing just the two unearned runs while striking out three and posting her third win of the season.

The Lady Blues' offense was paced by Mortland, Serpa, Gicante and Adam who all collected two hits. Mortland and Adam each had a pair of RBI and Serpa scored twice.

Game 2
IC broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the third inning. After Adam scored on an error, Serpa rapped a two-run single that scored Morland and Emma Nicholson.

Fontbonne came back with an unearned run in their half of the third and cut the IC lead to 3-2 in the fourth on an RBI single. A pair of Griffin runs in the fifth proved to be the difference as they held on for the split.

Serpa paced the IC offensive attack with a pair of hits and two of the team's three RBI. Adam also had two hits while Mortland recorded the remaining RBI.

Hannah Crouch suffered the loss in the circle, pitching the final two innings and two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Henry started the contest and tossed four innings allowing five and an unearned run.
