ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois College women's soccer team traveled to Fontbonne University for a non-conference match on Saturday. The Lady Blues got a second half goal from
Haley Sommer that lifted IC over Fontbonne by the final score of 1-0. IC improves to 4-5-1 overall this season.
Fontbonne came out very aggressive on offense with four shots on target in the first 11 minutes of action. First-Year goalkeeper
Sophia Kriegesmann made two great saves to eliminate the Griffins chances. IC and Fontbonne battled back-and-forth as the score went into halftime tied at 0-0.
IC's
Cassidy Tacker started the second half in goal for the Lady Blues. In the 61st minute,
Haley Sommer intercepted a pass from a Griffins defender just outside the IC attacking net. Sommer took two touches toward the net and striped a shot just over the diving Fontbonne goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
IC held a strong defensive stance for the remainder of the match to defeat the Griffins. Kriegesmann and Tacker combined to save 11 Fontbonne shots in the victory.
The Lady Blues will open Midwest Conference play hosting Knox College on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:00 PM.
