CLAYTON, MO – The Illinois College women's basketball team used a huge second quarter performance to roll past Fontbonne, 72-39, in the season opener for both teams Wednesday at the Dunham Student Activity Center.
Leading 15-10 at the end for the first quarter, the Lady Blues outscored the Griffins 29-8 in the second stanza, including a 9-1 spurt to start the quarter and cruised from there.
Ashlyn Wightman led the IC effort by posting a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Maya Smith added 12 points along with five assists and
Jayln Patterson grabbed 12 rebounds as well.
The Lady Blues had a decisive edge on the boards and in depth as they out rebounded Fontbonne 43-23 and enjoyed a 32-10 advantage in points off the bench.
IC returns to action Saturday when they travel to River Forest, Ill. and face Concordia University Chicago. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
