DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois College women's basketball team traveled to Millikin University for a non-conference decision Sunday afternoon. The Lady Blues fell to 15th-ranked Millikin by the final score 52-84. IC now stands at 3-3 overall this season.
In the opening minutes, Millikin jumped out to a quick 5-11 advantage. Midway through the quarter, IC's
Maya Smith started a 5-2 Lady Blue run when she battled through the contact and converted the conventional three-point play that cut the deficit down to three at 8-11. Shortly later,
Kendra Bass cut the deficit down to two at 10-12 with a short jump shot in the paint. However, Millikin closed out the first quarter on a 12-0 run that gave the Big Blue a 10-24 advantage.
Two minutes in the second quarter, IC's
Anna McKee stopped the Millikin run with a successful three-point basket that made the score 13-26. Shortly later, IC's
Madison Webb started a 4-2 run with a fantastic layup which was followed by Smith knocking down a pair of free-throws. The Lady Blues battled the Big Blue to 23-47 halftime score.
In the third quarter, Smith started a 7-2 IC run with a deep three-point basket while Bass and
Ashlyn Wightman each contributed a basket in the run. In the final quarter, Bass scored the first six points for the Lady Blues in the quarter that included two layups and draining a pair of free-throws.
For the game, IC had two student-athletes finish in double-figure scoring led by Bass with 18 points while Smith contributed 12 points. Wightman led IC in rebounding with six rebounds while
Jayln Patterson and Smith each hauled down five.
The Lady Blues will open Midwest Conference play with a visit to Cornell College on Tuesday, November 28 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 PM in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
