WAVERLY, Iowa – The Illinois College football team saw its magical season come to a close at the hands of third-ranked Wartburg, falling 49-14 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs at Walston-Hoover Stadium.
Wartburg jumped head with two first quarter touchdowns before IC's offense got going. Quarterback
Destin Chance found
Collin Brunstein from six yards out with 1:28 remaining in the quarter to get the Blueboys, who were making the school's second-ever appearance in the playoffs, on the board. The key play of the drive was a 44-yard hookup between the duo.Â
The Knights pulled away in the second quarter, scoring 28 unanswered points and taking a 42-7 lead into halftime.
Illinois College came out in the second half and put the only points of the third quarter on the board. Like the first quarter, Chance found Brunstein this time from 38 yards out to cut the deficit to 42-14 but that would close out the scoring for IC. Wartburg put the final points of the game on the board early in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.
Chance finished the day going 27 of 54 for 311 yards and a pair of touchdowns. 15 of those completions went to Brunstein for 147 yards and both touchdowns.
The Blueboys, champions of the Midwest Conference, won the automatic bid to the playoffs and finished the season with a 9-2 overall record.
