RIVER FOREST, Ill.- The Illinois College Blueboys started their season on the road against the Dominican University Stars. IC fell to the Stars in a hard fought overtime battle with a final score of 88-85.
Jake Mazrimas led the team in scoring and rebounds finishing the game with 26 points, nine rebounds, and two assists. Other double figure scorers included
Troy Burrows with 19 and
Benton Singleton with 14.
The Stars were able to jump to an early lead after two three-point field goals by Jackson Smith to start the game. After multiple lead changes, the Stars were able to put together a seven point run to go ahead 31-23 with 6:06 left in the first half. Dominican would be able to maintain that lead and stand ahead of the Blueboys heading into halftime with the score at 44-31.
The Blueboys were able to fight back in the second half to erase the deficit after a made layup by Singleton put the Blueboys ahead 55-54 with 12:32 left in regulation. It would be a close game after that with the score tied at 68 with just 3:19 remaining.
Illinois College would go up by three after a made free throw by Burrows with just 34 seconds remaining in the game. Dominican's Jackson Smith was able to drain a huge three-pointer in the final seconds to tie the game 74-74 and send it to overtime.
Dominican would take the lead early in the overtime period and hold off the Blueboys to secure the win. This drops the Blueboys to 0-1 as they try to bounce back in their home opener against Cornell College on Sunday, 2/14 at 5:00 PM.
