Lady Blues Stifle Lawrence in Season Finale

The Vikings were held to less than 25 percent shooting from the floor as Illinois College closed out the 2019-20 season with a win.

APPLETON, Wis. – The Illinois College women's basketball team had no postseason berth to play for on Saturday, but you wouldn't have known it from the defensive effort put forth by the Lady Blues. Lawrence University shot less than 25 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 23 times, paving the way to a 61-40 victory for IC. The Lady Blues end the 2019-20 season with a record of 13-12 (9-9 Midwest Conference).

The game opened with a Carly Cameron basket, answered by one from Grace Minogue to tie the score in the first minutes. From there, Illinois College embarked on an 8-0 run over more than four minutes, with Cameron supplying two more buckets in that stretch. The Lady Blues began to heat up from behind the three-point line in the closing minutes, with triples from Lakeida Nichols, Junie Zirkelbach and Cameron to make it 19-7 after 10 minutes.

The defensive domination continued in the second quarter as Illinois College scored the first eight points, holding Lawrence scoreless for more than six minutes. Krista Bass had a pair of layups during that run. Grace Yaunches nailed a three-pointer just before the halftime horn to give IC a 37-17 edge.

In the third quarter, the Lady Blues held the Vikings to just two field goals and increased their lead to 47-22. In a span of time bridging the third and fourth quarters, Lawrence was held scoreless for close to seven minutes. The lead increased to 29 points late in the game, 61-32, before the Vikings closed it out by scoring the final eight points of the contest.

In their final games for the Lady Blues, Cameron had 14 points and 11 rebounds along with two steals and two blocks. Yaunches scored eight points and handed out a game-high four assists. Zirkelbach also had 14 points in the game. Off the bench, Krista Bass ended with nine points and five steals.
