FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Illinois College men's soccer team posted its second straight shutout and this time had the offensive backing to come away with a 2-0 win over Franklin College, giving Head Coach
Evan Philpott his first career victory in charge of the Blueboys. IC is now 1-2-2 overall on the season.
The game-winning goal came quickly and in familiar fashion for Illinois College. The Blueboys scored in the fourth minute on a free kick from
Brock Ziegemeier to the head of
Nick Walter for Walter's second goal of the season. Walter scored a similar goal in a 1-1 draw with Manchester University last weekend.
For most of the way after that, it was all about the IC defense. Franklin managed only nine shots in the match and only one of them was on target.
Raul Rubalcava was on the spot for the save to maintain the shutout.
The Blueboys piled on pressure throughout the match and had a total of 17 shots on the day (11 on target). The match was put to bed when
Spencer Bloome latched onto a pass from
Caleb Saldana and snuck a shot past goalkeeper Elliott Clark in the 88th minute to make it 2-0.
Ziegemeier and
Bryan Hamilton each had four shots in the match. Rubalcava ran his personal shutout streak to 200 minutes in earning his first win of the year.
Illinois College is back home on Wednesday night, hosting Webster University at 7 p.m.
