JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's soccer team has had the habit of going into overtime this season. The Blueboys have also started to make a habit of pulling out victories in the extra session. In IC's fifth overtime of the 2019 season, the Blueboys earned their second overtime win in a row by a score of 1-0, defeating MacMurray College on a golden goal from
Spencer Bloome in the 92nd minute. Illinois College is now 3-4-2 on the year.
The first half was very active on both sides, but there were few clear scoring chances created by either side. Illinois College went to the half with a 4-2 edge in total shots, while possession was even at 50% each way.
The run of play began to favor Illinois College almost immediately as the second half began. The Blueboys outshot MacMurray, 9-5, after halftime. However, all nine of those shots came in the first 17 minutes of the second half and none were on target. The Highlanders didn't create as many chances, but they also had the best chance of regulation in the 67th minute when Gustavo Gutierrez picked out a corner and
Raul Rubalcava had to go to a full stretch to barely push the ball just outside the right post.
Early on in overtime,
Caleb Saldana earned Illinois College a corner kick. On a delivery by
Bryan Hamilton,
Brock Ziegemeier got a touch and moved the ball onto the back post where Bloome was waiting to loft the ball into the top corner.
The Blueboys ended with a 14-7 edge in total shots on the night. Bloome led the way with four. Rubalcava made four saves in earning his fourth shutout of the season.
