MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Illinois College women's soccer team scored six of its goals in a second-half explosion during an 8-0 victory over Mount Mary University on Saturday afternoon in the team's season opener.
Katie Elmore and
Annie Burns each had hat tricks in the match for IC.
In spite of the final score, it took 19 minutes for the Lady Blues to find the breakthrough against the Blue Angels. Illinois College had nine shots prior to the
Katie Elmore goal, with Hannah Rose making five saves to keep the game scoreless. Elmore's first of the season off of a pass from
Olivia Dobbs ended up being the game-winner and she added a second in the 30th minute from an
Ashley Brokaw assist.
There was no let-up in the second half for the Lady Blues and they scored five goals in a potent stretch of less than 10 minutes of action early on after the break.
Mychaela Bennett made it 3-0 in the 52nd minute from an
Annie Burns assist. Burns then scored in the 54th minute from a
Katie Elmore pass. Burns made it a brace in the 56th minute on a
Bailey Wassell assist and Dobbs collected her first of the season in the 59th minute on a penalty kick. Burns made it a hat trick in the 61st minute on yet another assist from Dobbs.
Katie Elmore capped the scoring in the 75th minute with an unassisted goal.
Illinois College ended up with 37 shots in the match compared to just one for Mount Mary.
Charlotte Crofton,
Savannah Henson and
Lindsey Kormelink all combined for the shutout. The 8-0 margin of victory is IC's largest in a match since a 12-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan University back on Aug. 30, 2014.
Illinois College makes its home debut on Wednesday night, hosting MacMurray College in a Mayor's Cup matchup at England Stadium at 7 p.m.
