Men’s Tennis Sweeps Illinois Wesleyan to Set Single-Season Wins Record

With a 9-0 win over the Titans, the Blueboys notched their ninth win of the season on Saturday.

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team made history on Saturday with a 9-0 decision over Illinois Wesleyan. By claiming their ninth win of the season, the Blueboys set a single-season school record for victories, breaking a four-way tie with eight wins that included last year's 2018 team.

IC made quick work of the Titans and it started in doubles. Jacob McQueen and Connor McAndrew won, 8-1 at No. 3 doubles and were joined moments later by Jonah Wheeland and Cameron Doerr with an 8-0 win in the No. 2 match. Michael Connolly and Miguel Vaca had the toughest go of it, but still earned a point with a relatively comfortable 8-4 win at No. 1.

On Senior Day for Vaca and Connolly, each added points to the total with wins in singles as well. Vaca was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1 over Justin Piotrowski. Wheeland took down Michael Behrensmeyer at No. 2, 6-3, 6-0. Connolly then added in his 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Cole Hundman in the No. 3 match.

Doerr eked out IC's closest win of the day at No. 4 singles, scraping by Will Dooley, 6-3, 7-6(4). At No. 5, McQueen dominated Joe Morro, 6-1, 6-0. McAndrew ensured the Blueboys of all nine points with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sid Saxena.

Finishing up the regular season with a record of 9-10 that includes a program-best mark of 4-4 in the Midwest Conference, the Blueboys now make the journey up to Madison, Wis. next weekend for the Midwest Conference Singles and Doubles Championships. Singles play begins on April 27 at 8 a.m. and doubles takes place on April 28 starting at 8:15 a.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Center.
