MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Illinois College women's basketball team went 10-for-12 from beyond the arc, paving the way for a 76-64 road win at Monmouth College on Wednesday night in the Midwest Conference opener for both team. IC is now 5-3 (1-0 MWC), while the Fighting Scots sink to 4-2 (0-1 MWC).
Monmouth scored the first five points of the game, but soon IC came roaring back and
Megan Price's fourth three-pointer of the first quarter gave the Lady Blues a 25-17 lead after one.
Price's fifth three-pointer of the game opened the second quarter and pushed Illinois College's lead into double-digits. Monmouth trailed by as many as 12 late in the quarter before cutting it to six. Nearing halftime, layups from
Lilly Pepper and
Micah Huwe helped the Lady Blues regain a double-digit lead at 39-28 heading into the break.
Monmouth made another run in the third quarter and got within a point, but the three-point line continued to prove critical as
Grace Yaunches hit consecutive triples to push the Lady Blues back ahead. A three-pointer by
Krista Bass just before the third quarter buzzer made it 58-45. In the fourth quarter, the Fighting Scots got no closer than 11 points as IC coasted to victory down the stretch.
Price scored 19 points in the first half and ended with 21 in the game on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Illinois College also received a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double from Pepper.
Carly Cameron came off the bench and added 12 points.
The Lady Blues come back to Sherman Gymnasium to host Cornell College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the team's MWC home opener.
