JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team lost by a score of 9-0 on Sunday morning to Cornell College in the final Midwest Conference match of 2019 and the final home match for seniors
Madelyn Deardorff,
Sally Hixson and
Lena Reed. The Lady Blues end the Fall portion of their schedule at 6-7 with a 3-6 mark in conference play.
Illinois College played Cornell close in doubles but came up empty in all three matches. The tightest match of the three came at No. 1 where Hixson and
Sophia Roth fell by a score of 8-5 to Cornell's team of Abbey Nelson and Emmaline Fievet. The Rams took 8-3 victories at Nos. 2 and 3.
In singles, Cornell had straight-set wins in each match from Nos. 3 through 6. Roth and Hixson each took the match to a third-set tiebreaker but came up short. Nelson took Roth down at No. 1, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2. Fievet topped Hixson at No. 2, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.
Next up for Illinois College is the MWC Singles and Doubles Championships on Oct. 19-20 at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis. Doubles action begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the singles tournament is held starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
