MONMOUTH, Ill. – Tied at 50-50 with 10 minutes remaining, Monmouth College went on a run midway through the second half and the Illinois College men's basketball team was unable to recover as the Fighting Scots picked up a 73-61 win on Wednesday night. The Blueboys fall to 4-13 (2-8 Midwest Conference) with the loss.
Though three-point shooting has been a strong suit for the Blueboys, IC shot just 6-for-25 from beyond the arc in the game while Monmouth shot a torrid 9-for-15 from distance. That helped the Fighting Scots make up for a lackluster first half in which 11 points from
Mason Speer helped Illinois College take a 32-30 lead.
The game remained very tight in the first 10 minutes of the second half and a
Trevor Otten three-pointer gave Illinois College its last lead at 50-49. Monmouth would then tie the game on a free throw that started an 8-0 run to take a lead that would hold up until the end of the contest.
Speer ended with a team-high 19 points.
Sean McDonald added 13 and
Michael Adams came off the bench to score 12. Will Carius led all scorers in the game with 27 for the Fighting Scots.
Illinois College comes home for the first of four straight home games on Jan. 19, hosting Cornell College at 5 p.m.
