JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's and women's swimming team hosted the first of four events at Coultas Natatorium in the 2018-19 season on Saturday with a quad meet against Knox College, Millikin University and Principia College. The Blueboys and Lady Blues each knocked off Knox and Principia by healthy margins, though Millikin was able to defeat IC and earn a clean sweep of the three teams.
In the day's 28 events, Illinois College totaled nine event victories, including two apiece from
Marty Ambre and Hannah Marks in individual events. Ambre also swam on two winning relay events and Marks was on one winning relay as well.
The day opened with Illinois College wins in the 200 Medley Relay. The Lady Blues won the event in 2:00.73 behind Kate Edelstein, Marks, Marcella Jacquemain and Lindsay Bruce. The Blueboys followed that with a win of their own, touching the wall in 1:46.16 thanks to
Isaac Daigle,
Mike Weisenfelder,
Steven Lorett and Ambre.
Ambre didn't get much rest as he quickly followed that with a win in the 1650 Freestyle, posting a time of 18:51.22. He would add his other individual victory in the 500 Freestyle (5:25.32).
The two individual wins for Marks came in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke. The Midwest Conference champion cruised in each event, winning the 100 in 1:12.94 and the 200 in 2:41.98.
Jacquemain had the other win for the Lady Blues on the day, taking home the 400 IM with a time of 5:19.68.
For the Blueboys, the final two wins of the afternoon belonged to Daigle in the 200 Freestyle (1:52.49) and the 200 Freestyle Relay team of
Kaden Canales, Ambre, Weisenfelder and Daigle (1:33.15).
Illinois College had one new entry into the team's record book as Edelstein swam a time of 2:24.81 in the 200 Backstroke. The freshman finished second in the race for the Lady Blues, posting the third-best time in the event in school history.
The Lady Blues ended with seven other runner-up finishes on Saturday as well. Those second-place finishers were Caitlyn Bowser in the 1650 Freestyle (20:57.70), Jacquelin Castellon in the 200 Freestyle (2:19.82) and 500 Freestyle (6:17.28), Edelstein in the 100 Backstroke (1:07.77), Jacquemain in the 100 Butterfly (1:08.50) and 200 Butterfly (2:38.48), and the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Castellon, Edelstein, Bruce and Marks (1:55.24).
The men's team totaled six runner-up finishes. Those belonged to Lorett in the 100 Butterfly (58.91) and 200 Butterfly (2:21.94), Weisenfelder in the 100 Freestyle (52.62) and 100 Breaststroke (1:09.20), Daigle in the 200 Backstroke (2:13.37) and
Myles Genrich in the 500 Freestyle (5:37.37).
Illinois College goes back on the road next week for the Monmouth College Invite on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. The following week, Monmouth will return the trip for a dual meet back at Coultas Natatorium on Nov. 17.
