MONMOUTH, Ill. – A fast start by Monmouth College was all that was needed in wet conditions on Saturday as the Fighting Scots held the Illinois College men's soccer team to seven shots and shut out the Blueboys, 3-0. The loss drops IC to 4-8-1 (1-2-1 Midwest Conference) on the season.
All three of Monmouth's goals came in the first 31 minutes of the match. The scoring opened in the eighth minute when Martin Zafirov finished off a chance set up by Mario Sanchez. The Fighting Scots then doubled their advantage in the 18th minute on a Lucas Sondgeroth goal assisted by Zafirov. The opening flurry was finished by Agustin Miranda in the 31st minute on an assist from Alvaro Alvarez.
Shortly after Monmouth's third goal, Illinois College had its first attempt on goal in the match. A
Brock Ziegemeier effort in the 32nd minute was saved by Cadan Glattback to keep the Fighting Scots ahead by three at the halftime whistle.
Illinois College had more attacking chances in the second half, but of the team's six shots, only two of them were on frame.
Kyle Tucker and
Justin Cozart had shots saved by Glattback after halftime as Monmouth completed the shutout.
Raul Rubalcava was tagged with the loss in goal for IC. He ended with three saves on the day.
The Blueboys close out the weekend with a home match tomorrow against Cornell College. Action at England Stadium begins at 11 a.m.
