GRINNELL, Iowa – The Illinois College women's soccer team closed out its 2018 campaign on Saturday with a 6-0 defeat to Grinnell College. With the win, Grinnell locks up a top-three spot in the Midwest Conference.
The story of the match was how the Illinois College defense would handle the numerous attacking options at Grinnell's disposal. The Pioneers poured in 48 shots, with 27 of those on target. Despite the best efforts of
Lindsey Kormelink (21 saves on the day), the Lady Blues gave up three goals on either side of halftime.
Jordan Maddaus started the scoring in the 11th minute for Grinnell and she was nowhere near being finished. In the 15th minute, Elyse Salpekar made it 2-0 and Gwen Holtzman added onto the lead before halftime with a strike in the 35th minute.
As the second half got underway, Maddaus' second of the day in the 48th minute increased the lead to 4-0. Minutes later, Holtzman scored once again to make it 5-0 in the 52nd minute. Maddaus finished off her hat trick in the 69th minute.
Illinois College had four shots on the day, all of which came from
Katie Elmore. The sophomore had two shots that required a save from Elizabeth Hunt.
The Lady Blues close the season at 6-12-0 (2-7-0 MWC). Grinnell will advance into next week's MWC Tournament at 9-6-1 (7-2-0 MWC) and face a semifinal match against St. Norbert College on Nov. 2 in Galesburg, Ill.
