ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Illinois College women's tennis team had no trouble on Tuesday evening, nearly pulling off a complete shutout of Fontbonne University in a 7-0 victory. Neither team fielded a No. 3 doubles team or a No. 6 singles player, so those points were left off the board. Illinois College barely allowed the Griffins a game in the other matches, improving to 5-7 on the season.
In doubles action,
Sophia Roth and
Sally Hixson defeated Becky Kottmeyer and Lakayline Davis in the No. 1 match, 8-0.
Kalisa Goertz and
Madelyn Deardorff matched them at No. 2 doubles with an 8-0 triumph over Philyce Webb and Emily Bay.
In singles play, Roth, Hixson and Goertz all defeated their opponents at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 by scores of 6-0, 6-0. The lone game that Fontbonne won on the night came at No. 4, but
AnnaBeth Batson still had an easy time of it in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bay for IC's sixth point of the night. With Fontbonne unable to field a fifth player, Deardorff took the default victory at No. 5 for the seventh and final point of the win for the Lady Blues.
Illinois College concludes its regular season schedule on Oct. 6 on the road, facing Cornell College at 9 a.m. and Grinnell College at 3 p.m.
