CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team opened the Spring season with an emphatic 9-0 sweep of Blackburn College on Thursday night. The Lady Blues improve their overall mark for 2016-17 to 3-8.
Illinois College got off to a strong start with a 3-0 lead in doubles. The No. 1 pairing of 
Kathryn Ryan and 
Sally Kate Hixson cruised to an 8-0 win over Gariel Pierce and Karlee Brimberry. Elsewhere, 
Madelyn Deardorff and 
Lena Reed earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 and 
Jovanna Chavez and 
Kitty Justice took home an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
The Lady Blues clinched the victory quickly in singles. Ryan won her No. 1 match over Brimberry, 6-0, 6-1. Hixson was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Pierce at No. 2 and Reed defeated Samantha Brown at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.
With the score at 6-0 and the win already secured, Illinois College and Blackburn played pro sets in the remaining three matches. Chavez won her No. 4 singles match, 8-2. At Nos. 5 and 6, Deardorff and Justice each claimed 8-0 wins.
Illinois College continues the Spring season with a road match at Illinois Wesleyan on March 26. The match is slated for a 10:30 a.m. start.
