LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Illinois College men's basketball team hung with Midwest Conference leaders Lake Forest College for nearly 30 minutes on Wednesday night before the Foresters unleashed a furious rally that put the game out of reach. Lake Forest improved to 7-1 (4-0 MWC) with a 79-62 victory over the Blueboys, dropping IC to 3-3 (0-3 MWC) on the year.
Brady Hays helped keep Illinois College in the game in the first half, scoring 13 points and hitting a pair of shots from behind the arc. A three-point play by Hays with just over six minutes gone gave IC its largest lead of the first half at 14-9, and he connected on a triple to take a 17-13 advantage, but a 7-0 run from Lake Forest pushed the Foresters back in front and they took a 32-31 lead into the break.
Max Stutsman hit a three coming out of halftime to give the lead back to Illinois College, and threes from
Tim Parks, Stutsman and
Mason Speer gave the Blueboys a 42-35 edge with three minutes gone in the second half.
Sean McDonald accounted for the next five IC points, but after a jumper from McDonald gave the Blueboys a 47-42 lead, Lake Forest scored the next 14 points.
A layup from Hays finally broke up the Lake Forest run, but another quick 10-1 burst from the Foresters pushed their lead to 66-50 with seven minutes to play. The closest Illinois College would get from there would be 14 and Lake Forest cruised to the victory.
Stutsman ended with a team-high 18 points, while Hays added 16. McDonald chipped in with 10 points. Parks had eight points and tied for the game-high with seven rebounds.
Illinois College comes home for a non-conference matchup on Dec. 12, hosting Lincoln Christian University at 7 p.m.
