DE PERE, Wis. – The Illinois College women's basketball team couldn't get its shots to go down on Saturday, falling to St. Norbert College by a score of 66-44. The Lady Blues shot 27.6 percent from the field on the afternoon, dropping to 2-6. The Green Knights improve to 4-3.
St. Norbert pulled away gradually throughout the game, winning each quarter by five or six points. The Green Knights opened the contest with an 8-0 run before baskets by
Grace Yaunches and
Shannen Quehl cut the deficit in half. A jumper from
Sydney Lett got Illinois College within two at 13-11, but St. Norbert ended the opening quarter with a 19-13 lead.
Lett notched the first bucket of the second quarter to again bring Illinois College within four, but the Lady Blues could get no closer. A Sarah Wiseman three put St. Norbert ahead by double-digits late in the first half and the Green Knights went to the break with a 35-24 advantage.
A fast start to the second half pushed St. Norbert's lead even higher. The Green Knights went on top by 19 points in the final minute of the third quarter before a Quehl three-point play cut the IC deficit to 54-38 entering the final quarter.
Illinois College managed to hit just two field goals in the final 10 minutes. The first was a
McKenzie Skaggs three-ball with 7:10 remaining. The final basket for IC was a
Brielle Greenleaf breakaway layup with 4:30 to go.
Greenleaf ended with a team-high 12 points in the game. Quehl had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shannon Propst came off the bench to score eight points in the game.
Illinois College concludes its opening three-game conference road trip on Dec. 6, facing Lake Forest College at 7:30 p.m.
Update: Effective Dec. 7, St. Norbert announced a 10-game suspension for its women's basketball program. Since this results in an unbalanced MWC schedule, all results for MWC games prior to the Dec. 7 suspension do not count in the MWC standings. At the time of this announcement, Illinois College has an updated MWC record of 1-1.
