By: Though down after doubles, IC rallied from a 2-1 deficit to top the Buccaneers, 5-4, on Sunday morning.
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team took one of its two final home matches of the season on Sunday at the Bellatti Tennis Complex. The Lady Blues rallied to beat Beloit, 5-4, in the morning before suffering a 9-0 loss to Midwest Conference power Lake Forest in the afternoon. IC moves to 5-9 on the season, including a final record of 2-7 in the MWC.
In the morning session, Beloit used wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take a 2-1 lead on Illinois College. Fortunately,
Kalisa Goertz and
Madelyn Deardorff were able to trounce Hayden Lamphere and Rose Williams by a score of 8-3 to keep the Lady Blues within striking distance.
In singles, the Buccaneers won matches at No. 2 and 3, but Goertz won her No. 5 match over Emma Hahn, 6-0, 6-0. Deardorff downed Williams at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3 and
Lena Reed was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Lamphere at No. 4. The closest match was at No. 1 where
Sally Hixson defeated Kiri Youngquist, 7-5, 6-3, giving Illinois College the come-from-behind victory.
The momentum wasn't able to carry over to the afternoon against a Lake Forest team that has been defeated just once all season. The Foresters took a 3-0 lead after doubles, with Goertz and Deardorff coming the closest to victory at No. 3, where they took an 8-4 loss. Lake Forest completed the sweep with six straight-set wins in singles. Goertz moved up to No. 4 for the afternoon and was dealt a 6-1, 6-4 defeat, though she won the most games of any IC player.
Kitty Justice and
Lisa Noggle were honored on Sunday as the seniors played their final home matches of their careers.
The Lady Blues will head to Madison, Wis. next weekend for the MWC Singles & Doubles Championships, but before they do, they will have two final non-conference matches. The first comes on Oct. 10 as IC travels to Fulton, Mo. to face Westminster College at 5 p.m.
