MONMOUTH, Ill. – If you score three goals often enough, wins are usually going to start piling up. That hasn't been the case lately for the Illinois College women's soccer team, however. Despite putting three in the back of the net for the second match in a row, the Lady Blues lost a 5-3 decision to Monmouth College on Saturday. IC falls to 3-10-0 (1-3-0 Midwest Conference), while the Scots move to 8-5-0 (3-2-0 MWC).
It didn't take long for Illinois College to find a goal.
Mackenzie Bedgood netted her sixth of the season in the third minute to put the Lady Blues on top. That lead lasted just over three minutes however, as Hadyn DeLeeuw tied the match on an assist from Alex Izquierdo. Kara-Jade Gordon put the Scots up, 2-1, in the ninth minute with an unassisted effort.
Mychaela Bennett tied the score in the 25th minute with her third goal of the season and the match looked to be heading to halftime knotted at 2-2 before Natalie Wolski put Monmouth ahead with 17 seconds left in the first half thanks to assists from Gordon and Hannah Lingle.
On the other side of halftime, Hannah Kugler scored unassisted in the 48th minute and Gordon cashed in her second of the day in the 51st minute to put Monmouth up, 5-2. A 53rd minute goal from
Ashley Sholmire, her 10th of the season, provided some solace for Illinois College but the Lady Blues would get no closer.
Bedgood took a team-high four shots, putting two on frame. Bennett, Sholmire,
Olivia Dobbs and
Morgan Lallish all ended with two shots each.
Charlotte Crofton made eight saves in goal for Illinois College.
The Lady Blues return home to England Stadium for their final non-conference match of the season on Oct. 10. IC will host Illinois Wesleyan University, the No. 21 team nationally in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, at 7 p.m.
