JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's soccer team fell to Lake Forest College on Senior Day by a score of 4-0, ending IC's chances at the Midwest Conference Tournament. The Foresters improve 9-5-1 (6-1-0 MWC) with the win, while IC goes to 8-8-1 (3-4-1 MWC).
After an evenly-played opening 20 minutes, Lake Forest took the lead in the 22nd minute when Elyas Ingram deposited a volley past
Ty Clearwater after a free kick from Jakub Opiola. Just over five minutes later, a corner kick from Seton Trostle bounded around the box and the Blueboys were unable to clear. Eventually, Opiola put it away from close range to make it 2-0.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Illinois College's hopes of a comeback took a hit when a foul was whistled in the 18-yard box and Ingram put his penalty kick past Clearwater for a 3-0 edge. The Blueboys began to apply more pressure on the Lake Forest defense, but Jan Roessler had saves on shots from
Josh Schmidt,
Ryan May and
Collin Basler. In the 65th minute, Lucas Geib took a ball played upfield by Sal Gloria, snaked through the IC defense and hit a shot that went off the left post and then in on the bottom right corner to up the Lake Forest lead to 4-0.
Illinois College ended up with 11 shots in the match.
Roger Mies and
Nick Copley had two each to lead the way for the Blueboys.
The 2017 men's soccer season comes to an end next weekend, when Illinois College travels to Cornell College for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 28.
