GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Illinois College women's basketball team was denied a season sweep of St. Norbert College on Friday night as the Green Knights prevailed over the Lady Blues, 78-48. St. Norbert, for now, continues a streak dating back to the 2006-07 season of now allowing an opponent to sweep the season series from it. Illinois College falls to 8-4 (5-2 Midwest Conference), while the Green Knights improve to an identical record and move into a tie for third place in the MWC with the Lady Blues.
St. Norbert proved early that it wasn't going to be an easy night for Illinois College, scoring on a second-chance opportunity on the first possession of the game and then adding onto the lead with a third-chance putback for a 5-0 lead. The Green Knights would score the first nine points of the night and lead 15-2 before a
Carly Cameron three-pointer. Late in the first quarter,
Brielle Greenleaf canned a three of her own, making it 19-10, but the final five points of the quarter went to St. Norbert and IC trailed, 24-10, after 10 minutes.
After allowing the opening basket of the second quarter to St. Norbert, Illinois College went on a 6-0 run courtesy of three-pointers from Cameron and
Jaicie Halleman to make it 26-16. That would prove to be as close as the Lady Blues would get the rest of the night. By halftime, the Green Knights had re-established a 15-point lead at 42-27.
Illinois College came out in the third quarter and scored six of the first eight points, the last basket in that stretch scored by Cameron to make it 44-33 with 6:28 remaining in the quarter. For the next seven minutes, stretching though the third quarter and into the fourth, St. Norbert would go on a 23-0 run to take a 67-33 lead. The Lady Blues would close the game on a run, but it was too little, too late.
Greenleaf led Illinois College with 13 points on the night, while Cameron added 11. Cameron was also the high rebounder for the Lady Blues with five. Eight other players scored for IC, though no one else had more than five.
Illinois College quickly gets back to action on Jan. 14 with a 1 p.m. tip-off against Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.
