Free Kick Sends Principia Past Blueboys

ELSAH, Ill. – The Illinois College men's soccer team fell in its season opener of 2016 by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Principia College. The Blueboys went a goal down early in the first half but leveled through freshman Brock Ziegemeier. In the extra session, IC gave up a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and Principia's Briggs Hurley curled a ball around the wall went near post to beat Ty Clearwater for the game-winner.

Illinois College had success going at the Panther defense in the opening stages of the match, putting numerous shots on frame and picking up a yellow card against Alphonce Baraza. The tide changed against IC in the 21st minute however as Theodoro Ferreira notched an unassisted goal to put Principia on top, 1-0. The Blueboys pressed for an immediate answer but were whistled for offside three times before the half.

Time began to work against Illinois College in the second half until Ziegemeier got hold of a Mesfin Lenth corner kick in the 76th minute. Through a crowd of people, Ziegemeier found the unguarded back post to tie the score at 1-1 and force overtime.

In the extra session, Principia earned a free kick off of a hand ball in the IC final third. Hurley then found a way past Clearwater for the winner.

Denpota Furugaki led Illinois College with four shots in the match, one of which went on frame. Ryan May and Roger Mies added two shots each. Clearwater ended with three saves in the match.

The Blueboys (0-1-0) will begin their home campaign on Sept. 7 with a 5 p.m. matchup against Fontbonne University at England Stadium.
