APPLETON, Wis. – The Illinois College women's soccer team got its offense back on track on Sunday afternoon, putting four in the back of the net for an easy 4-0 win over Lawrence University. The Lady Blues improved to 5-3-0 (2-1-0 Midwest Conference) and sent the Vikings to 1-7-0 (0-2-0 MWC).
The hardest part of the day for the Lady Blues might have been waiting for the match to really get underway. After about five minutes of play, a weather delay halted action and nearly 90 minutes went by before IC and Lawrence could return to the field. When they did,
Meadow Hardy hit the crossbar almost immediately and the Lady Blues forced four saves out of Kori Looker in just over 10 minutes.
The breakthrough for Illinois College came in the 21st minute.
Kaylen Sims hit the post with a shot, but the ball ricocheted to
Ally Kjellander to put away for a 1-0 lead. A couple minutes later, the Lady Blues made four substitutions and
Kelsey Ziegemeier tucked away her first opportunity with Kjellander assisting again to make it 2-0 in favor of IC in the 28th minute.
Right after halftime, the Lady Blues erased any lingering doubts by scoring twice in the 48th minute. Sims was the goal-scorer each time, going high out of the reach of Looker to double the Illinois College lead to 4-0.
Charlotte Crofton made four saves in the second half to preserve the shutout, the first of her career.
Illinois College ended the match with a 25-9 advantage in shots. Sims had eight, five of which were on target. Kjellander and Ziegemeier each ended with four shots apiece, and Hardy and
Mackenzie Bedgood had two.
The Lady Blues step away from conference play for a match at Greenville College on Sept. 28. IC and the Panthers will get underway at 7 p.m.
