GALESBURG, Ill. – The Illinois College women's soccer team fell out of a first-place tie in the Midwest Conference on Wednesday following a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Knox College. The Prairie Fire struck in the fourth minute and added one more goal before halftime, slamming the door shut in the second half with a goal in the 82nd minute. The Lady Blues fall to 6-5-1 (3-2-0 MWC) while Knox moves to 12-0-1 (4-0-0 MWC).
Illinois College had little time to settle into the match before Knox took the lead through an unassisted Kayla Brown goal. The Prairie Fire doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute as Brown assisted Rosie Medina for a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Lady Blues had few clear-cut scoring opportunities throughout, but one came late in the match when a foul allowed IC to push numbers forward. Knox cleared the chance out of the 18-yard box and quickly countered down to the other end where Kelsie Pos scored on an assist from Jen Crary to make it 3-0.
Knox ended with a 21-6 advantage in shots, while
Samantha Vacek made eight saves in goal for the Lady Blues after her MWC Defensive Performer of the Week accolades from a week ago.
Illinois College will take a break from MWC play with a non-conference home match against Millikin University on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
