JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's soccer team had its undefeated home record in 2016 taken down on Senior Day as Cornell College came away with a 1-0 win against the Blueboys on Saturday. The Rams close the season with a record of 8-6-2 (2-5-2 Midwest Conference), while IC ends with a mark of 4-11-3 (3-6-0 MWC).
Though Cornell found the winning goal late in the match, it was Illinois College who controlled the action most of the way. The Blueboys outshot the Rams by a 7-3 margin in the first half and an 8-4 margin in the second half.
Brock Chartier,
Mesfin Lenth and
Ryan May all forced saves from Cornell goalkeeper Jerome Richards in the first half to keep IC off the board.
As the match continued on, Illinois College poured pressure on the Cornell final third, but the Rams refused to crack.
Brock Ziegemeier and
Roger Mies each forced saves from Richards early in the second half. Cornell finally broke through in the 76th minute when Christian Wright headed home on a cross from Pietro Amado to make it 1-0. May had two shots go wide of the target after that and Lenth had a header saved in the final 30 seconds of the match to allow the Rams to escape with the win.
May ended the day with a match-high four shots and Chartier had three shots.
Jojo Comstock made two saves in goal for the Blueboys.
