FULTON, Mo. – The Illinois College women's soccer team fell by a score of 5-1 to Westminster College (MO) on Thursday in the team's final non-conference match of the season. The Lady Blues dropped to 7-8-1 ahead of Sunday's critical matchup with Lake Forest College. The Blue Jays improved to 7-6-0 on the season.
Westminster opened the scoring in the 16th minute on a goal by Honor Kehde and doubled it in the 31st minute on a tap-in rebound by Heidi Gundy. Less than three minutes later, an own goal by the Illinois College defense gave the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead at the half.
Right after the break, Westminster upped its lead to 4-0 on a Kaely Fitterling goal in the 47th minute. Gundy then notched her second goal of the match in the 68th minute for a 5-0 lead. Illinois College finally broke up the shutout in the 73rd minute on an
Ashley Sholmire goal, assisted by
Olivia Dobbs.
Samantha Vacek made two saves in the first half and
Charlotte Crofton made four stops after halftime. Sholmire had five of IC's seven shots in the match.
Illinois College's final two matches of the regular season will determine the team's postseason fate. The Lady Blues meet Lake Forest on Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m. before closing the regular season with Senior Day at home at England Stadium on Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
