RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Illinois College women's soccer team fought valiantly, but Dominican University broke through with the game-winning in the 60th minute and came away with a 1-0 non-conference victory on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Blues drop to 6-4-1 on the year, while the Stars improve to 6-4-0.
Dominican controlled the action much of the match, outshooting Illinois College, 20-6. But thanks to some tough defense from the Lady Blues, only five of the 20 shots by the Stars were on target and four of those were saved by
Charlotte Crofton.
For very close to 60 minutes, Illinois College clung on in a 0-0 tie, but Dominican went ahead just before the hour mark. A high cross played in from the right wing was won in the air by Alexis Hoskins and past Crofton to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.
That would be all that Dominican needed on the afternoon. Illinois College attempted two more shots in the match, both by
Ashley Sholmire, but both were just wide of the post.
Sholmire and
Audrey Gangwish combined for four of the six IC shots in the match.
Ally Kjellander and
Josie Garfat had the other two for the Lady Blues.
Illinois College returns to Midwest Conference play on Oct. 5 with a huge 3:30 p.m. matchup at Knox College. The Prairie Fire and Lady Blues currently sit tied atop the MWC table.
