GRINNELL, Iowa – The Illinois College women's soccer team gutted out a 2-1 road win over Grinnell College on Saturday afternoon to remain in a tie for first place in the Midwest Conference. The Lady Blues (6-3-1, 3-1-0 MWC) got the win despite being outshot 18-7 in the match. The Pioneers fall to 4-5-2 (2-1-1 MWC) with the loss.
The opening goal in the match came in the 30th minute as
Kaylen Sims notched her third of the year to give the Lady Blues a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Grinnell uncorked 15 shots, nine of which were on frame. The very first shot that was on-target beat
Samantha Vacek as Hannah Truesdale scored off a feed from Simona Bambi to tie the match at 1-1 in the 52nd minute. Wasting little time,
Elizabeth Wagnon forced a save from Regan Kasprak in the next minute of play and in the 57th minute,
Ally Kjellander scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to give IC a 2-1 edge.
That was all the help that Vacek would need. Grinnell put eight shots on target the rest of the way but Vacek saved them all. Her record now stands at a well-earned 4-3-0 after making 10 saves, eight of which occurred in the closing 45 minutes.
Illinois College makes the trip to Dominican University (IL) tomorrow for a 12 p.m. match with the Stars in River Forest, Ill. Following that non-conference match, the Lady Blues meet Knox College on Oct. 5 in a battle of the two first-place teams in the MWC.
