Box Score

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Illinois College women's basketball team ran its winning streak to three games with an impressive 77-56 win over Monmouth College on Wednesday night. Ten of the 13 players who took the floor for IC scored on the night and seven players had at least six points in the victory. The Lady Blues improved to 8-4 (5-2 Midwest Conference), while the Scots sank to 1-11 (0-7 MWC).

The beginning stages of the game mostly featured IC and Monmouth trading baskets on either end. That changed when Mallory Battefeld, with the Lady Blues trailing by a score of 10-8, scored to knot the game at 10-10. On the next trip downcourt, Alyssa Garde scored on a long jumper from the wing after pump-faking her defender up in the air. Jaicie Halleman ended the run by rolling in a three-pointer to make it 15-10. The Lady Blues ended the first quarter with a 16-12 lead and would never trail the rest of the way.

Monmouth's Kelsey Walsberg made a triple to start the second quarter, momentarily cutting the Illinois College margin back to a single point, but Shannen Quehl scored four of IC's six in a quick 6-0 burst that made the lead 22-15 for the Lady Blues. The Scots were trailing by a count of 29-23 halfway through the quarter, but Illinois College stepped up the defense and didn't allow Monmouth to score for nearly four minutes. In that time, an 8-0 run brought the lead up to 14 and the Lady Blues went to the locker rooms with a 38-26 advantage.

Any lingering doubts were quickly put to rest in the second half as Illinois College scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take a 48-26 lead with four minutes elapsed. In the final minutes, an Ashley Hoegger three-pointer and jumper from Hanna Bergkoetter upped IC's lead to 27 points at 62-35 before a Monmouth basket in the closing seconds made it 62-37 with 10 minutes to play.

With the outcome in hand, Illinois College was able to get every player in uniform onto the court in the fourth quarter. Monmouth scored the first five points of the quarter to pull within 20, but the Scots would get no closer the rest of the way.

Sydney Lett scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Lady Blues offensively. She was joined in double-figures by Bergkoetter with 11 and Quehl with 10. Jill Friedrich added nine and Battefeld ended with seven. Halleman and Brielle Greenleaf each closed with six points on the night.

Illinois College will be back home at Sherman Gymnasium on Jan. 9 to host Lake Forest College. The Lady Blues and Foresters will get underway at 3 p.m.
