Box Score MONMOUTH, Ill. – Things went against the Illinois College men's basketball team right from the start on Wednesday night in a road matchup at Monmouth College. Foul trouble and 17 percent shooting in the first half put the Blueboys in a deep hole and things didn't get much better in the second half as the Scots walked away with an 89-47 win. IC drops to 4-8 (1-6 Midwest Conference) while Monmouth improves to 7-4 (4-3 MWC).
In the opening minutes, Illinois College big men
Max Stutsman and
Dom Aiello each picked up two personal fouls. Though the fouls allowed
John Taylor to make his season debut coming off of a preseason ankle injury, the Scots had already gone ahead by a score of 13-3 after four minutes of play.
While the Blueboys were having shots spin around and out or hit the back rim and bounce off, Monmouth was on fire. The Scots shot over 56 percent as a team in the opening 20 minutes, led by 13 from Lamont Mitchell. His steal and breakaway dunk made it 27-7 with less than eight minutes to play in the first half and the lead for Monmouth reached 30 points at 41-11 before six late points from
David Bauer made it 43-17 at the break.
Cody Hildebrand and Stutsman with the first four points of the second half before three straight three-pointers by Monmouth brought it back to a 52-21 game. The edge grew to as much as 45 points for the Scots as time ticked away midway through the half. As the game neared a close,
Tim Parks made his collegiate debut for the Blueboys and recorded the first two points of his career.
Bauer led Illinois College with 13 points on the night.
Mitchell Patterson ended with seven and Stutsman and Aiello ended with six apiece.
Illinois College returns home to Sherman Gymnasium on Jan. 9 to take on Lake Forest College at 1 p.m.
