By: Down 2-1 after doubles, Illinois College earned straight-set victories in four singles matches to earn its first Midwest Conference win of the season.
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Trailing 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match, the Illinois College women's tennis team launched a thrilling comeback to defeat Knox College, 5-4, on Tuesday evening at the Bellatti Tennis Complex. The win snapped a five-match losing streak for the Lady Blues and gave the team its first Midwest Conference win of the season.
Beginning with doubles play, the No. 1 team of
Kathryn Ryan and
Tamar Norville easily put away Knox's No. 1 team of Taytem Chapman and Miranda Corbett by a score of 8-2. The Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams for IC fell by 8-2 scores however, putting the Prairie Fire ahead, 2-1, entering singles play.
It was a different story once singles began for the Lady Blues. Ryan had no trouble with Chapman at the No. 1 position, winning 6-0, 6-3. At No. 2, Norville did away with Savannah Sailors, 6-1, 6-3. Further down,
Jovanna Chavez won a break point at a critical moment in the match to earn a 6-2, 7-5 win over Corbett at No. 4.
Brianna Pohlman frustrated Maddie Schacht at No. 5 singles to get a 6-3, 6-0 win as well.
Illinois College (2-6, 1-5 MWC) will return to action on Monday afternoon to host Monmouth College at the Bellatti Tennis Complex beginning at 5 p.m.
