MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Illinois College men's basketball team absolutely had the range on Wednesday night in its road contest at Monmouth College. The Blueboys were 10-of-19 from behind the arc, better than 52 percent from long distance. Unfortunately, not all of their shots were taken from that far away. IC made 14-of-34 from inside the arc (.412) and 7-of-15 at the free throw line (.467), allowing the Scots to pull away for an 85-65 win. Illinois College goes to 4-18 (3-14 Midwest Conference) on the year.

Illinois College led only briefly in the contest, but the Blueboys hung with the Scots almost all the way through the first half. Tim Schappaugh had 11 of his team-high 16 points in the opening 20 minutes, and his three-pointer with 2:30 remaining until halftime brought IC within a single point at 35-34. Down on the other end of the floor, Monmouth got itself to the foul line and Reed Goodbred knocked in a pair. That was the start of a half-ending 10-0 run from the Scots to take an unexpected 11-point edge in the locker rooms.

Two free throws from Monmouth's Riley Blea extended the Scots out to a 64-46 lead with 11:19 remaining in the game, but the Blueboys would make a push to get back in it. Unsurprisingly, the rally started with a Brad Herrmann three-pointer. After a pair at the line from David Bauer, Jacob Taylor connected from deep for a quick 8-0 run that cut the deficit to 64-54 with 9:10 to play.

In need of a stop, Illinois College played solid defense on the next possession until Blea was able to post up and score. The next trip down ended in an IC turnover and the two resulting free throws from Monmouth grew the lead back to 68-54 with 8:13 to go. The closest that the Blueboys would get the rest of the way would be 13 points.

Schappaugh connected on all four of his three-point attempts to end with 16 in the game. Bauer also splashed four threes in the game, scoring 14 points off the bench. Cody Hildebrand was the other Blueboy in double-figures, ending with 12. Mitchell Patterson grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Monmouth's Andrew Mathison led all scorers with 17 points.

Illinois College will celebrate Senior Day for Brandon Fishburn and Jacob Taylor when the team returns home on Saturday to host Grinnell at 3 p.m. The first 100 students into the Bruner Center for the women's and men's doubleheader will receive special Senior Day t-shirts, and free pizza will be available for all students with a valid Illinois College ID.
